Stonington is a spectacular 365-acre property located in a hidden valley tucked beneath the northeastern side of McAfee Knob on Catawba Mountain. Catawba Mountain is part of the Appalachian Mountain chain that runs in a southwest/northeast direction across the western region of Virginia. The property is located within the Catawba valley, approximately 19 miles west of Roanoke, Virginia and 13 miles west of Interstate 81.
The property is well protected against intrusion. The southern and eastern borders of the property abut United States National Park Service land. East of the National Park Service land is the wilderness area for Carvins Cove, Roanoke’s water supply. The western boundary lies along a tree farm and the northern border along a small, uninhabited farm.
A 12-acre arm of land provides access from an entry right of way and leads to the main body of land which is roughly 6000 feet long and about 3000 feet across. The property lies almost entirely in historic Botetourt County. A small portion of the property lies in Roanoke County. Taxes ($522.90 for 1997) are paid in Botetourt County. The property is presently registered with the Botetourt County Land Use program, which qualifies it for the low tax rate afforded private, recreational land use. Individual landowners have the option of participating in this program.
The general topographic shape of the property is that of a large bowl with prominent ridges coming in towards the center from the eastern and southeastern borders. The enclosed reproductions show portions of the U.S. Geological Survey maps for the Catawba, Va. quadrangle upon which the boundaries of the property have been overlaid. Approximately 40 acres of land are in fields, with the remainder in hardwood forests. A number of small roads enable travel about the farm with either a sport-utility vehicle, an all terrain vehicle or a farm tractor. Views from the farm’s many ridges are truly spectacular.
The farm does not have electricity or modern plumbing. There is a small cabin for shelter, an old fashioned outhouse serves as “the” bathroom facility and a spring provides water. An old barn provides shelter for ATVs and tractors. By the way, it is also a great place for setting up picnic tables for gatherings of friends and family. |

Directions to the Country Home

From I-81 take U.S. Route 419 and travel west to Hanging Rock. At the Hanging Rock traffic light, turn right on U.S. Route 311. Continue for seven miles on Route 311. The road soon ascends Catawba Mountain. As you descend to the bottom of Catawba mountain, turn right on State Route 779 (at the Catawba Post Office), and proceed for five miles. Turn right on the dirt road [State Route 663 , Rhodes Lane) and continue one mile to the end of the road. Stonington can be accessed from that location.
